California
California was among the first 10 states to enact a charter school law in the early 1990s. With more than 800 public charter schools serving nearly 350,000 students, California is home, also, to nearly 20 green charter schools.
The Center for Ecoliteracy in California is dedicated to education for sustainable living. The center provides information, inspiration, and support to the vital movement of K-12 educators, parents, and other members of the school community who are helping young people gain the knowledge, skills, and values essential to sustainable living. It bases its work on these four guiding principles:
- nature is our teacher
- sustainability is a community practice
- the real world is the optimal learning environment
- sustainable living is rooted in a deep knowledge of place
Through the center’s initiative, Smart by Nature: Schooling for Sustainability, it offers both a strong theoretical framework and practical resources for combining hands-on learning in the natural world with curricular innovation in K–12 education.
