Earth Day History Resources for Green Charter Schools

Multimedia Exhibit, Curriculum

March 12, 2010

The Earth Day Network has available an Earth Day curriculum for schools that introduces a broad history of the environmental movement broken down into five eras: Pre-Conservation, Conservation, Modern, Environmental Justice and Sustainability.

The Wisconsin State Historical Society has completed the first phase of processing the papers of the late U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson and has posted online a rich collection of resources that will be valuable to all schools to mark the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, 2010.

The resources include photographs, speeches and other artifacts, such as the November 1969 issue of "The Gaylord Nelson Newsletter" describing plans for the first Earth Day teach-in.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies also has posted a moving multimedia exhibit.

Nelson's daughter, Tia, in 2008, described the connections among her father's work, green charter schools and the origins of the Green Charter Schools Network.
